During the Elizabethan period in the late 16th century, the 4th, 5th and 6th Earls of Derby were great patrons of companies of actors and theatrical performances at Knowsley Hall, London and across England. The most important acting companies in England are known to have performed in theatre festivals at Knowsley Hall and would have undoubtedly put their plays on in nearby Prescot.
Drawing inspiration from Prescot’s historic ties to William Shakespeare, Shakespeare North Playhouse was established in the summer of 2022. This stunning 470-seat timber-framed octagonal venue, designed in the Jacobean style, was met with enthusiastic public and critical acclaim. It offers a rich program of performances, activities, and discussions inspired by Shakespeare and accessible to all.
The playhouse features theatre, music, comedy, workshops, events, and activities that extend to the exhibition gallery, Studio, and Sir Ken Dodd Performance Garden. This vibrant and welcoming space encourages joy and creativity for everyone.
